Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister of State for Education and Manpower was at the Opening of the Singapore Robotics Games on Tuesday, 16 January 2007 at 10am at Republic Polytechnic.

Singapore Robotic Games (SRG) is one of the earliest and longest running robotics events in Singapore since 1993, the annual SRG provides our young robotics enthusiasts with the opportunity to develop their interests and talents in robotics and to showcase their creativity. This year, the SRG has attracted over 800 participants and more than 300 robots to compete in 15 events. Such an enthusiastic response is a reflection of the enduring allure of robotics and the lively interest in science and technology among our young.

Robotics Applications
Mr Gan noted that each year, the SRG gets more challenging with the addition of at least one new event or competition. The newest addition to this year’s Games is the underwater robot competition. This area of robotics has many potential applications. Underwater robots have been used extensively for oceanographic research and in other areas such as the maintenance of undersea cables and pipes. Perhaps the robots at this year’s competition will be the seed of future machines that will do these tasks and more, perhaps even lending assistance in underwater situations that are too dangerous or too deep for human divers.

Another area in which robotic technology may be expanded further is in biomedical and healthcare related applications. In medicine for example, doctors routinely use remote-controlled robotics to operate in constrained spaces, such as inside the heart, brain, spinal cord, throat and knee. As we move towards a time where a significant proportion of the population will live to 65 and beyond, robotics technology can potentially play an important role in improving the quality of life as we grow older. Mobile personal service robots, smart wheelchairs, intelligent walking frames and limbs that obey their owner's neurological commands are all potential robotic devices that could help significantly improve the quality of life of the elderly. There are infinite possibilities in robotics, limited only by the boundaries of our imagination. Some day, these devices may become an integral part of our lives. It is therefore fitting that the open category for this year’s Games requires participants to build a robot that performs interesting tasks for applications in entertainment, domestic chores, industry or other areas.

Robotics & Education
Singapore has placed a great strong emphasis on science and technology education. Robotics is an excellent platform for the integrated learning of science and technology. Multi-disciplinary knowledge from textbooks and others will be needed to solve practical problems. SRG offers a good opportunity for our students to develop their ability in innovation and enterprise.
